1. Polestar Pilates

Pilates

Pilates is a low impact exercises designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century to develop strength, flexibility, balance and inner awareness of our body. This method makes use of sequential and precisely performed movements that stretches and strengthens the muscles, while emphasizing on core control and proper alignment. System uses 6 key principles to actively train the body through correct and controlled patterns of movement, improve body flexibility working towards full range of motion & building body strength thru resistance training to establish a perfect working body from inside out. Increasing core strength allows for improved spinal support, balanced posture, structural alignment of the skeleton, and mobility of the extremities, such that the body is able to function more efficiently.

Focusing on coordination, movement flow, and corresponding breathing patterns are an integral part of Pilates exercises, creating a total mind and body workout. Pilates can be practices with or without equipments and the uses of equipment have tremendous carryover into all your physical activities because it trains you to perform all movements.

Safety while exercising is an important aspect of any fitness regimen. The Pilates system retains the body by increasing the strength and flexibility and improving balance, posture, alignment and muscle control. The Pilates system increases our self awareness, making us more aware of what we unconsciously do with our bodies and enables us to identify and alter bad habits.

Private Pilates session are usually on one-on-one or one-on-two basis and the instructor can design programs addressing individual injuries and or postural and strength inefficiencies.

Group Pilates Mat Classes

In group class environment, you can experience a variety of different movements and design the exercises to work different muscle groups. The classes are usually quite small ranging from 3 to 5 participants which means you will receive an optimum level of personal attention.

If you are one of the many people with scoliosis, you know that not all exercises are equal when it comes to strengthening, stretching and balancing your body. Depending on the severity of your scoliosis you probably figured out at an early age that many traditional exercises and sports just plain do not feel good in your body.

If no one ever explained to you why this is, you may have even learned to dislike exercise and movement because of your bad experiences. Movement and exercise are supposed to help you feel better, stronger and move easier. Unfortunately for those with scoliosis this is not always the case. Your curve and twist in your spine can make certain movements painful and even impossible. And many movements can actually create more imbalance in your body and cause pain.

Here is where the Pilates method of exercise (with the guidance of a professional Pilates instructor) comes in. One of the founding principles of the Pilates method is creating balance in the body which is done by strengthening while in alignment. Another key to the Pilates method is that each exercise is individualized to the body doing the exercise with their specific alignment and body features in mind. What this means to you is that each Pilates session should be tailored to your body(and your spinal curve) so that you can create balance in your muscluture that eases some of the common aches and pains caused from scoliosis.

Please note that Pilates as an exercise form has become very popular lately and not all instructors and all classes are created equal. I recommend that everyone start off their Pilates journey with an experienced instructor one on one if possible. A professional Pilates instructor can evaluate your individual body and give you recommendations specific for your body. This is especially important if you have scoliosis.

Every body with scoliosis is different and there are not cookie cutter adjustments to exercises that everyone with scoliosis should do. Having a properly trained instructor will allow you to learn the method properly without getting injured. If you have scoliosis and are looking for an exercise method that is enjoyable and makes your body feel better when you do it- check out Pilates!

3. Rolfing

Rolfing Rolfing

Rolfing Structural Integration (Rolfing SI) is a form of hands-on manipulation and movement education developed by Ida P. Rolf over 50 years that organizes the whole body in gravity. Rolfing SI works on the connective tissue (myofascial system) to release realign and balance the whole body in gravity, enhancing your posture and freedom of movement.

Rolfing is aimed at improving overall body alignment and functioning, unlike massage which focuses on relaxation and relief of muscle discomfort on the areas presenting with tension. As body structure becomes more organised, strain patterns are alleviated, pain and physical stress decreases.

Rolfing SI is generally performed over 10 sessions. The first three sessions work on the more superficial layers of connective tissue. Sessions four through seven remove strain from deeper layers of the body. The remaining sessions organize and align the body as a whole, providing better balance, enhanced range of motion, and a higher energy level. If your schedule requires a break between sessions, after sessions three and seven are ideal places to pause in the process.

Since Rolfing SI has the ability to dramatically alter a person's posture and structure, it can potentially resolve physical discomfort, release tension and alleviate pain. Rolfing SI aims to restore flexibility, revitalize your energy and leave you feeling more comfortable in your body. People seek Rolfing SI as a way to ease pain and chronic stress, and improve performance in their professional and daily activities.

4. Biodynamic Craniasacral Sacral Therapy

Biodynamic Craniasacral Sacral Therapy Biodynamic Craniasacral Sacral Therapy

Biodynamic Craniosacral Sacral Therapy (BCST) is a gentle non-invasive, hands-on treatment for the whole body. The treatment is focused on supporting the health of the whole being, especially the nervous system.

BCST enhances the function of the Autonomic Nervous System, consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The body heals and repairs itself when the parasympathetic is dominant when we are most relaxed or asleep. The sympathetic nervous system, known as the “Fight or Flight” system is affected by the modern way of living and this can lead to undue stress and can be a chronic debilitating condition as we all know.

What are the benefits?

  • Enhances the body’s own healing abilities

  • CST clears restrictions in the fascial tissues of the body

  • Life-changing experiences, being more present and grounded

  • Gentle way to work with emotional trauma, anxiety, stress and depression where trauma is processed at a pace the body can handle
